An unpublished 1/3 stater with an archaic head of Herakles
Lot 1412
ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. Circa 500-450 BC. 1/3 Stater (Silver, 13 mm, 2.79 g, 9 h). Horseman to right. Rev. Archaic bearded head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress, within round incuse. Apparently unpublished. Some marks and the obverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, about very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Exactly where this charming coin was issued eludes this cataloger. An origin from Asia Minor seems likely, and the archaic head of Herakles is somewhat reminiscent of the hektai from Herakleia Pontika, but the coin must be later and likely dates to the first half of the 5th century, if not slightly later.
